What defines a vintage club chair?

A vintage club chair is a deep, low-slung armchair designed for relaxation, typically featuring substantial padding and supportive armrests. These pieces prioritise comfort through generous proportions and robust internal construction. Such chairs emerged in various regional styles, incorporating materials like supple leather, woven fabric, and exposed hardwood frames. Their enduring appeal lies in their ability to anchor a room while offering a comfortable place to sit.

Are Art Deco club chairs different?

Art Deco club chairs from the nineteen-thirties present streamlined profiles, rounded geometric shapes, and smooth leather or suede upholstery. They move away from ornate Victorian carvings in favour of clean, sweeping lines. These chairs often utilise exotic woods or satin birch and focus heavily on comfort through simplified, low-slung geometry. Their aesthetic reflects the modernism of the interwar period.

How should I care for leather upholstery?

Leather upholstery benefits from regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasional treatment with appropriate leather conditioners. Keeping these chairs away from direct sunlight and excessive heat prevents the material from drying out. Allowing the natural patina to develop preserves the character of vintage leather while maintaining its suppleness over years of daily use.
