How were folding screens used historically?

Folding screens served primarily to create private dressing areas, block draughts in large rooms, and partition domestic spaces before open-plan living became common. They were easily repositioned throughout a house to alter the function and intimacy of a room as needed.

What materials are typical for these screens?

Timbers such as mahogany, oak, and walnut form the structural frames, often paired with brass hinges. Surface panels incorporate materials like lacquer, painted leather, silk, velvet fabric, and decorative glass.

How do I care for a lacquered screen?

Keep wooden and lacquered surfaces away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity to prevent warping and cracking of the finish. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoid using chemical polishes or water on delicate painted or lacquered areas.

Are these screens fully reversible?

Construction varies by piece, with some designs finished identically on both sides to allow placement anywhere in a room. Others feature decorative work solely on the front face, with plain or simpler wood treatment on the reverse.

How many panels do these screens usually have?

Most folding screens consist of three or four hinged panels, though larger examples feature six to eight leaves for wider spans. The number of panels determines the overall width and stability when freestanding in a space.
