What periods do these storage pieces come from?

The pieces span the eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth centuries, with a heavy concentration originating during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Regional styles from Britain, France, Scandinavia, and Austria reflect local craftsmanship of these periods. Dates range from eighteenth-century folk art trunks up to early twentieth-century cupboards and lacquer cabinets, showing how domestic storage evolved across different European traditions.

How do I care for original painted surfaces?

Original painted surfaces require gentle treatment, avoiding modern chemical solvents or abrasive cleaners that can strip historic pigment layers. Dusting with a dry, soft cloth is generally sufficient for daily maintenance. Keep pieces away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity fluctuations to prevent the wood beneath from expanding and causing the paint to crack or flake.

Are these pieces suitable for everyday use?

Most of these items were built as functional household storage, including wardrobes, chests of drawers, and kitchen cupboards that remain entirely practical for modern living. Their internal compartments and sturdy timber construction accommodate contemporary clothing and household items. Care should be taken with antique drawer runners and hinges, which benefit from gentle handling compared to modern mechanical drawer systems.

What is scumble painting?

Scumble painting is a decorative technique where a translucent glaze is applied over a lighter base coat and manipulated using combs, rags, or brushes. This process creates simulated wood grains or patterned textures on plain pine furniture. In nineteenth-century housekeeping furniture, scumble finishes offered an affordable way to give utilitarian storage pieces the appearance of more costly hardwoods.
