How do I clean old brass candlesticks?

Polishing depends entirely on whether you want to preserve the dark age patina or achieve a bright metallic shine. Most collectors prefer to leave old surfaces untouched. Gentle washing with warm soapy water removes accumulated dust and wax without stripping the historic finish.

What is a chamber stick used for?

Chamber sticks were designed for carrying through dark hallways before domestic electricity. The wide saucer tray caught any dripping wax. They usually sit lower than table candlesticks and include a side loop for fingers.

Are these candlesticks always sold in pairs?

Many listings feature matched pairs designed for mantlepieces or dining tables. Single desk candlesticks and chamber sticks also appear frequently. Buyers should check descriptions carefully to confirm whether an item is solo or part of a matched set.

How can I tell the period of a brass candlestick?

Dating relies on base construction, casting seams, and stylistic details like Georgian columns or art deco geometric lines. Maker stamps and registry marks provide exact production years. Heavier cast brass generally points to earlier centuries, while twentieth-century pieces show different manufacturing tolerances.
