How do I wear a brooch safely?

Pin the piece through tightly woven fabrics that can support the weight without sagging, ensuring the safety catch is fully engaged. For delicate silks, consider using a backing disc or securing the pin through an inner seam. Heavier gem-set pieces require sturdy woollens or structured lapels to keep the design upright and prevent the pin stem from bending during daily movement.

How can I date my brooch?

Examine the materials, gemstone cuts, and fastening mechanisms, comparing them against documented styles from the Victorian, Edwardian, and mid-century eras. Hallmarks stamped on the reverse often provide specific assay office marks and date letters. Stylistic shifts, such as the symmetrical geometry of Art Deco or the textured gold of the 1960s, offer reliable chronological markers when hallmarks are absent.

Are these brooches also pendants?

Many examples feature a hidden hinged loop or fixed bale tucked behind the pin stem, allowing the jewel to transition easily from lapel to chain. This dual functionality was particularly common in Edwardian and late Victorian pieces. Converting a brooch for neckwear adds versatility, though collectors should check that the folding mechanism or jump ring remains secure before hanging it from a heavy chain.

How should I clean antique gold?

Use a soft microfibre cloth to gently polish the gold surface and remove accumulated skin oils or dust from around stone settings. Avoid harsh chemical dips, especially if the piece contains pearls, turquoise, or opals. Soft organic gems and turquoise are porous and can be permanently damaged by liquid immersion, so professional cleaning is recommended for delicate multi-gem items.
