How do I wind my clock?

Most mechanical travel clocks require a dedicated key inserted into winding squares located on the backplate. Turn the key gently until firm resistance indicates the mainspring is fully tensioned. Take care not to overwind the mechanism, as this places undue stress on the internal springs and gears. Each full wind typically powers the movement for eight days.

Can I travel with it today?

While originally built for journeys across Europe by train and carriage, vintage mechanisms require careful handling today. Transporting them safely means ensuring the escapement is stable and the original leather case is used. Modern vibrations and sudden impacts can easily disturb delicate balance wheels. Treat them as fragile decorative objects that appreciate occasional travel rather than daily commuting.

What is a gorge case?

A gorge case refers to a distinct architectural housing shape defined by stepped cornices at the upper and lower edges. This style provides structural rigidity while framing the bevelled glass windows. Craftsmen utilised this design extensively in high-grade French workshops during the nineteenth century. It remains a hallmark of quality construction among portable timepieces.

How do I date my clock?

Dating relies on examining stylistic markers, dial typography, and any maker marks stamped onto the brass movement backplate. Victorian and Edwardian examples often display specific decorative flourishes like filigree or handle designs. Comparing the escapement type and case proportions against known production periods helps narrow down the decade of manufacture. Hallmarks and retailer signatures also provide clear historical context.
