How do I mount a swing mirror?

Most tabletop swing mirrors are self-contained units that simply rest on a flat surface without wall mounting. The glass frame hangs between two upright posts using adjustable screw pins or wooden knobs. Tightening these side pins maintains the desired tilt angle without requiring additional hardware or installation.

What is a toilet mirror used for?

A toilet mirror serves as a tabletop grooming glass for dressing and applying cosmetics. The base frequently contains small drawers for storing jewellery, pins and small personal items. Historically placed on top of dressing chests or washstands, these pieces provided adjustable reflection before fitted bedroom wardrobes became common.

How do I date a mahogany swing mirror?

Dating relies on observing construction methods, timber choice and stylistic details across the frame and base. Earlier Regency and Georgian examples often feature slender proportions and delicate bracket feet, while Victorian pieces typically display heavier scroll supports and flame mahogany veneers. Hand-cut dovetails in the drawers and the thickness of the mirror glass further assist in determining the period of manufacture.

Are these mirrors attached to tables?

Some pieces are standalone tabletop items with their own box bases, while others integrate directly into larger dressing tables. Standalone mirrors can be moved freely between different surfaces around the room. Integrated versions bolt securely into the backboards of matching dressing chests or duchess dressing tables.
