What is a Victorian stick holder?

A Victorian stick holder is a functional hallway furnishing designed to store walking sticks and umbrellas upright. These items keep entryways tidy by containing damp items and wet weather gear. Most examples date from the nineteenth century and utilise durable materials like cast iron, brass, and mahogany to withstand daily household use.

Where were they placed?

These holders traditionally sat in the hallway, entrance hall, or vestibule of a nineteenth-century home. Their primary job was to greet visitors and provide an immediate place to leave wet walking gear. Corner designs specifically fitted into tight angles, while larger hall pieces combined stick storage with mirrors, hooks, and bench seating.

How do I clean cast iron?

Cast iron requires gentle dusting and occasional light oiling to prevent surface corrosion. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners that strip the original patina and finish from the metal. Keeping the iron dry preserves the integrity of the foundry work and protects any integrated brass elements from unnecessary tarnishing.

Are all stick holders iron?

Not all pieces consist solely of iron, as makers frequently combined materials to suit different domestic interiors. Surviving examples feature combinations of cast iron and polished brass, alongside solid mahogany and pitch pine wooden structures. Some specialised items even integrated folding brass hardware directly into church pews or incorporated removable trays for water collection.
