How do I identify a Victorian rocking horse?

Victorian rocking horses are typically identified by their solid wooden construction, carved detailing, and integration of genuine horsehair for manes and tails. Many examples sit upon curved wooden rockers or incorporate braced safety stands characteristic of nineteenth-century workshop production.

Were these toys actually used by children?

These pieces were built as robust playthings for daily nursery use, resulting in natural wear and patination over decades. Rocking horses and pull-along toys bore the physical weight of generations of children before entering collections.

What is original paint on a toy?

Original paint refers to the earliest decorative coating applied to the wooden surface by the maker or contemporary workshop. Preserved dapple patterns and natural ageing distinguish these untouched surfaces from later restoration layers.

How do I care for antique wooden toys?

Antique wooden toys require stable indoor environments away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity. Gentle dusting with a dry cloth protects the historic paint surfaces and leather tack from degradation.
