What materials are cameos carved from?

Carvers utilised natural shells with contrasting strata, banded agate hardstones, volcanic lava and coral. These materials dictated the depth of the relief and the resulting colour contrast of the finished piece.

How were these pins worn?

Victorian women pinned them to collars, bodices, shawls and lapels as decorative ornaments. They functioned both as everyday accessories and as miniature works of art displayed on formal attire.

Are these pieces Italian or English?

Many carved shells and lava stones originated in Italian workshops catering to travellers on the Grand Tour. British and French goldsmiths frequently supplied the precious metal frames used to mount these imported carvings.

How do I identify the subject?

Subjects typically draw from classical mythology, depicting figures such as Flora, Psyche, Cupid, Demeter or historical personages. Recognising specific attributes like wheat for Demeter or wings for Cupid reveals the identity of the carved figure.
