How were writing slopes used?

A writing slope functioned as a portable desk for writing letters and storing personal documents before the widespread use of fitted study furniture. Owners placed the box on a table or across their knees to provide a firm, slanted writing surface. Inside, compartments held inkwells, sanders for drying ink, quibs, pens and writing paper. The lockable lid ensured that private correspondence remained secure while travelling or at home.

What is a campaign writing slope?

A campaign writing slope was built specifically for officers and travellers on the move during the nineteenth century. These pieces feature heavy brass corners and straps to protect the timber carcase from the rigours of transport. They also incorporate flush-fitting brass handles that do not catch on luggage or storage crates. The durable construction allowed the box to double as a field desk in temporary quarters.

How do I find secret drawers?

Secret drawers are typically concealed behind removable panels, dummy stationery stops or sliding partitions within the interior well. Removing the pen tray or lifting the vertical divider often reveals the hidden spring mechanism or thumb recess. Cabinetmakers designed these compartments to look like solid structural elements of the box interior. Finding them usually requires inspecting the internal framing for unusual grain breaks or loose wooden stops.

Can I use a writing slope today?

These boxes accommodate modern stationery, laptops or tablets depending on the internal dimensions of the specific slope. The slanted writing surface still provides a comfortable angle for reading or note-taking. Care should be taken with historical leather writing surfaces and working brass locks to preserve the antique condition. Many owners utilise them as decorative desktop storage while continuing to store letters and papers inside.
