What makes a victorian armchair on castors comfortable?

These chairs rely on deep coil-spring foundations packed with horsehair and wool stuffing. This traditional layering absorbs weight and provides a resilient, bouncy seat. The generous proportions and raked backs allowed Victorians to recline fully, making them prized pieces for relaxation in drawing rooms and libraries.

How do I identify a Howard and Sons chair?

Look for stamped brass castors, numbered legs, and distinctively deep, low-slung upholstery frames designed for maximum lounging. Many bear maker marks on the back leg or cotton web straps. Even unmarked pieces in the Howard style share the characteristic plump cushioning and balanced proportions typical of the firm's output.

Were castors original to these armchairs?

Castors were standard factory fittings on nineteenth-century armchairs to enable easy repositioning across heavy carpets. Brass cappings and roller wheels protected floor coverings and eased the weight of dense mahogany frames. Original castors often match the age of the timber and frequently feature maker stamps from firms like Cope and Collinson.

What is a country house armchair?

Country house armchairs are generously proportioned, deeply padded seats built for heavy daily use in large domestic interiors. They prioritize relaxed comfort over formal stiffness. These pieces often feature loose feather or down cushions, turned wooden legs, and robust castors designed to endure generations of lounging.
