What is a nursing chair?

A nursing chair is a low-seated Victorian or nineteenth-century chair designed to sit closer to the floor than standard seating. They frequently feature padded button-backs and lack arms to allow ease of movement. These pieces were traditionally placed in bedrooms and nurseries for feeding or general relaxation, offering a comfortable, relaxed posture.

How do I identify Howard and Sons style?

Howard and Sons style chairs typically display deep, sprung comfort, low profiles, and signature turned wooden legs fitted with brass castors. Their nineteenth-century designs prioritise generous proportions and uncompromised seating depth. Attributions often rely on characteristic aesthetic traits, structural build quality, and traditional upholstery methods associated with the firm's workshops.

Where should I place a low armchair?

Low armchairs suit bedrooms, dressing rooms, and drawing rooms where their reduced height creates an intimate seating arrangement. They work well paired beside low tables or placed near fireplaces. Because of their compact scale, they fit easily into corners or smaller reception spaces without dominating the room layout.

What is the difference between a slipper chair and a nursing chair?

Slipper chairs and nursing chairs both offer low seating heights, but slipper chairs traditionally served dressing rooms for putting on footwear. Nursing chairs often include taller backs or padded top rails designed for seated comfort in bedrooms. Both types share armless or low-armed silhouettes that distinguish them from standard parlour armchairs.
