What is a twin fusee clock?

A twin fusee clock utilises two distinct fusee mechanisms within a single movement, typically powering the timekeeping train on one side and the striking train on the other. This setup ensures steady force is delivered to the escapement from both springs, resulting in much higher accuracy than simpler spring-driven clocks.

How do I wind a twin fusee clock?

Winding requires inserting the key into the dedicated winding holes on the dial and turning gently until the spring reaches tension. Because the fusee chain regulates the pull, you must take care not to overwind the mechanism. Most examples run for eight days per winding cycle, requiring steady attention to both the time and strike trains.

Where should I place a bracket clock?

Bracket clocks suit heavy wooden tables, sideboards, or dedicated wall brackets where the movement can remain completely level. Keeping the clock steady prevents the pendulum from going out of beat and stopping the mechanism. Avoid placing them in areas subject to heavy vibrations or direct sunlight that might damage antique wood finishes.

How do I tell a wall clock from a bracket clock?

Wall clocks mount directly onto vertical surfaces and often feature drop-dial trunks designed to hang securely. Bracket clocks are heavier, freestanding portable units built with flat bases to sit flat on furniture. Wall variants emphasise dial visibility from across a room, while bracket clocks showcase fine cabinet woodwork and glazed side panels.
