How do I clean a traditional caucasian carpet?

Regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar removes loose grit from the wool pile. Professional specialist cleaning remains essential for addressing deep soil and preserving natural dyes. Water exposure should stay minimal during routine maintenance. Immediate blotting handles accidental spills safely.

Where were these carpets originally woven?

Weavers produced these textiles across the mountainous Caucasus region, encompassing areas like Shirvan, Karabagh, and Kazak. Each specific valley and village developed distinct geometric dialects. Nomadic and village communities created these pieces for daily domestic use. They traded surplus items through regional markets.

How do I tell different regional types apart?

Regional identification relies on observing specific structural traits, palette choices, and border arrangements. Kazak pieces favour large primary polygons, whereas Shirvan rugs utilise intricate repeating lattices. Examining the knotting style and end finishes provides additional clues to origin. Different tribes utilised distinct wool preparations and colour combinations.

Can I place these rugs in high-traffic hallways?

Wool construction and dense hand-knotting provide the durability required for busy domestic thoroughfares. Runner formats adapt well to corridors and entrance spaces. Using a quality underlay prevents slippage and absorbs impact beneath footsteps. This protection extends the working life of the textile.
