How do I identify a Victorian chair?

Victorian chairs often feature balloon backs, walnut or mahogany frames, and specific revival styles that emerged during the nineteenth century. Examining the timber and construction methods helps confirm the era. Makers of this period utilised machine assistance alongside hand joinery, resulting in heavier frames and distinct upholstery styles compared to earlier Georgian designs.

Were these chairs used for dining?

Many of these pieces were specifically created as dining sets or individual carvers for dining tables. Their proportions and sturdy wooden frames suited them for daily meals. Other variants, such as hall chairs and captains chairs, served different domestic functions in hallways, libraries, or offices.

What is a captains chair?

A captains chair is a sturdy wooden armchair with a low, rounded back rail supported by spindles. They were traditionally used in offices, ships, and country settings. Built from timbers like elm and ash, they provide robust support through their solid wooden seats and curved armrests.

How do I care for antique wood?

Maintain antique wooden surfaces by keeping them away from direct heat sources and sudden humidity changes. Regular dusting with a dry cloth preserves the finish. Applying occasional appropriate wax feeds the timber and protects the historic patina without damaging the original surface.
