A tallboy is a vertical storage unit combining multiple drawers in a single tall frame or stacked in two sections. It provides generous storage capacity while occupying minimal floor space in a bedroom. These pieces were traditionally designed to hold folded clothing, linens, and personal accessories within deep, sturdy timber drawers.

How do I date a chest?

Dating relies on examining construction techniques, drawer dovetailing, timber selection, and hardware styles across different historical periods. Georgian pieces often feature hand-cut dovetails and solid brasses, whereas Edwardian examples may show machine-sawn elements. Secondary woods like oak or pine inside the drawer linings also offer clear clues to the regional origin and manufacturing era.

Where should I place it?

A tall vertical chest suits bedrooms, hallways, or dressing rooms where floor space is limited but vertical wall capacity is available. Because of their height and heavy timber construction, securing tall storage chests to a wall prevents tipping. Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to protect the polished mahogany finish from fading or drying.

What is a linen press?

A linen press is a tall storage cabinet featuring panelled upper doors that open to reveal sliding shelves or trays for folded textiles. The lower section typically incorporates a bank of wider drawers for additional garments. Originating in earlier centuries for household linen storage, these substantial pieces function well today as versatile wardrobe alternatives.
