What is a steel barrel flintlock?

A steel barrel flintlock is a muzzle-loading firearm that uses a flint and steel ignition system developed in the seventeenth century and utilised extensively through the Napoleonic era. These pieces served military, naval, and civilian personal defence roles, surviving today as historical artefacts of eighteenth and nineteenth-century gunmaking.

How do I identify the period?

Dating relies on stylistic clues, barrel proofs, and maker signatures stamped into the lock plate or metalwork. Georgian and Napoleonic military pieces often bear crown inspection marks or regimental numbers. Civilian pocket pistols display evolving furniture fashions, from early Queen Anne turn-off forms to later box-lock mechanisms characteristic of the Regency period.

Were these used in the military?

Many examples on this page served as official military or naval sidearms, including Tower Arsenal dragoon pistols and cavalry holster pieces. Regulation arms followed strict government contracts. Other pieces were privately purchased by officers or civilians for personal protection during travel.

How should I clean my flintlock?

Antique firearms require careful conservation rather than aggressive cleaning, preserving the natural aged patina on the steel and wood components. Historic metal surfaces should be kept lightly oiled to prevent active corrosion. Action mechanisms should be handled gently and kept dry to protect internal springs and original parts.
