What are silver cobalt glass liners?

Silver cobalt glass liners are the removable blue glass inserts housed inside open silver salt cellars, mustard pots, and sugar baskets. They protect the precious metal from corrosive contents like salt while adding a rich splash of colour to the tableware.

How were salt cellars used?

Salt cellars sat upon the dining table so guests could spoon loose salt onto their plates during meals. The cobalt glass liner held the salt safely within an ornate silver or silver-plated frame.

Are the glass liners original?

Many pieces retain their original blown blue glass liners, though replacements were often made to match the dimensions of the silver frame. Matching the exact contours and thickness of the glass helps determine if the liner belongs to the period of the metalwork.

How do I care for silver and glass?

The glass liner can be removed from the silver frame and washed gently in warm soapy water without risking the metal polish. Silver frames require periodic cleaning with a soft cloth and appropriate polish, taking care to keep abrasives away from the glass.
