What is a Windsor chair?

A Windsor chair is a vernacular wooden seat built around a thick solid slab of timber, usually elm, into which the legs and back components are bored and wedged directly. This construction method creates a robust, enduring piece of furniture without relying on a traditional framed carcass.

How do I care for antique wood?

Keep wooden fireside chairs away from direct heat sources like modern radiators and open fires to prevent timber shrinkage and splitting. Apply a traditional beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the dry grain and preserve the historic surface patina.

Are these chairs comfortable?

Country seating is designed around the human form, featuring deep saddle-shaped elm seats carved out for hours of seated comfort by the hearth. High backs and broad arms offer natural support against winter draughts in older properties.

How do I date an old chair?

Dating relies on observing tool marks, timber combinations, assembly methods, and regional design traits recorded across the Georgian and Victorian periods. Changes in spindle turning styles and the wear patterns on the seat provide clear clues to an object's age.
