What is a Tunbridge Ware box?

A Tunbridge Ware box is a specific type of wooden container decorated with a mosaic of countless tiny, naturally coloured wood slivers that form detailed geometric or pictorial motifs. These pieces originate predominantly from the nineteenth century in Kent, representing a high point in specialised British micro-mosaic woodworking.

How were tea caddies used?

Tea caddies served to store expensive tea leaves securely under lock and key in the formal reception rooms of Georgian and Victorian homes. Servants typically kept the key, dispensing the precious leaves only when tea was prepared for the household and guests.

How do I care for rosewood?

Rosewood benefits from stable indoor humidity and protection from direct sunlight, which can fade the rich natural grain and dry out old timbers. Applying a minimal amount of appropriate furniture wax helps nourish the surface without building up excessive residue over the marquetry.

Dating relies on examining the construction methods, interior paper linings, lock types, and the prevailing decorative style such as Regency brass inlay or Victorian Tunbridge work. Secondary woods inside the box and the specific species of veneer used also offer reliable clues to the decade of manufacture.
