What is a regency rosewood console?

A regency rosewood console is a nineteenth-century side table built from dark, figured rosewood timber to stand flat against a room's wall. These pieces frequently incorporate folding tops for card or tea use, supported on central pedestals or carved legs.

How were these tables used originally?

Original usage included serving as decorative sideboards in hallways, display surfaces for lamps, and convertible tables for evening card games. Fold-over tops allowed rooms to transition quickly from formal drawing spaces to active game rooms.

How do I care for rosewood furniture?

Protect the timber by avoiding direct sunlight and maintaining steady indoor humidity to prevent veneer cracking. Dust surfaces gently with a dry cloth and apply occasional wax suitable for antique hardwood finishes.

How can I tell a Regency piece from a later copy?

Examine the secondary timbers underneath and inside the drawers for age-appropriate tool marks and timber shrinkage. Construction methods, hand-cut dovetails and period brass fixings provide reliable indicators of nineteenth-century manufacture.
