How do I clean a lacquer table?

Dust gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth to protect the delicate surface from scratching. Avoid using chemical polishes, water, or abrasive cleaners which can damage the black lacquer and gilding. Keep the table away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the lacquer from cracking or warping over time. A stable indoor climate preserves both the wood and the painted finish.

Are these tables sturdy enough for daily use?

Most occasional and side tables function well for holding lightweight items like lamps, books, or drinks. Care should be taken with surfaces featuring papier-mâché or delicate gilt decoration to avoid accidental impact. Heavier items or constant high-traffic use suit sturdier console or work tables better. Using coasters and protective mats helps safeguard the antique finish from rings and marks.

How do I distinguish Regency from later copies?

Examine the construction methods, timber types, and wear patterns on the underside and joints of the table. Genuine Regency pieces display period-appropriate joinery and natural ageing within the lacquer. Twentieth-century revivals often present more uniform surfaces, modern fixings, or differing lacquer formulations. Comparing the style of the Chinoiserie motifs helps place the piece within its correct historical era.

What is a work table?

A work table serves as a compact piece of furniture designed for needlework, sewing, and small writing tasks. These tables frequently feature internal compartments, drawers, or suspended fabric bags beneath the top. Regency examples often combine this practical storage with elaborate black lacquer and Chinoiserie decoration. They sit comfortably beside seating as decorative yet functional side tables.
