What is a red tortoiseshell table?

A red tortoiseshell table is a nineteenth-century French furniture piece decorated with Boulle marquetry, combining scarlet shell and brass inlay on an ebonised wood frame. These items include centre tables and writing desks designed in revival styles. Such tables function as decorative centrepieces in traditional interiors, offering both a functional surface and an elaborate visual display of historic craftsmanship.

How do I identify a Boulle table?

You identify a Boulle table by searching for the characteristic contrast of tortoiseshell and metallic brass inlay arranged in symmetrical scrolls and floral motifs. Ormolu mounts typically frame the edges and corners. These pieces frequently date from the Victorian era or nineteenth-century French revival periods, reflecting Louis XIV and Louis XV design influences.

Where were these tables made?

These tables originate primarily from French workshops active during the nineteenth century, aligning with Napoleon III and various Louis revival periods. Parisian makers produced much of this intricate furniture. Export to British markets was common during the Victorian era, bringing these ornate pieces into stately homes and grand townhouses.

How should I care for tortoiseshell furniture?

Protect tortoiseshell and brass inlay furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations. Consistent indoor conditions prevent the shell and wood from drying out or warping. Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical polishes that might damage the delicate ormolu mounts and shell veneer.
