How do I date an oak cupboard?

Dating relies on examining the construction methods, tool marks, hardware fixings, and overall stylistic vernacular such as Louis XV or George III proportions. Earlier 17th and 18th-century examples display hand-riven timber and pegged joinery, whereas 19th and 20th-century pieces incorporate machine-sawn components and different fastening techniques.

How do I clean and maintain oak?

Maintenance requires simple dusting with a dry or slightly damp cloth, avoiding modern silicone polishes that build up on historic wood surfaces. Applying occasional natural wax helps nourish the dry grain and preserves the historic patina developed over centuries of use.
