How do I wind an antique clock?

Most mechanical clocks utilise a specific key inserted into the dial arbors to tension the mainspring barrels. Turn the key gently until resistance increases, taking care not to overwind the movement. Ensure you match the correct key size to each square winding arbor to avoid damaging the delicate brass teeth inside.

Where should I place a heavy mantel clock?

Position your clock on a stable, level surface such as a wooden mantelpiece, sturdy desk, or wall bracket. Heavy marble and gilt bronze cases require solid support to prevent tipping. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, draughts, and damp areas to protect the internal metal components and exterior gilding.

How do I identify a French nineteenth century clock?

Examine the movement backplate for stamped foundry marks, maker names, and serial numbers. French makers commonly stamped their medals and cachets directly onto the brass casting. Stylistic cues such as cast rococo scrolls, champlevé enamel dials, and fire-gilded ormolu further point to nineteenth-century French workshops.

What is a carriage clock used for?

Carriage clocks were originally designed as portable timepieces for travellers during the nineteenth century. They typically feature a swinging handle on top and a protective travelling case. Today, they function as compact table clocks that deliver mechanical movement and brass craftsmanship to smaller spaces like desks and bedside tables.
