What periods do these artworks cover?

The available selection spans several centuries, starting from seventeenth-century portraits through eighteenth-century works and nineteenth-century landscapes. Twentieth-century movements up to the mid-century modern period are also well represented. Buyers find everything from Victorian coastal scenes to Edwardian watercolours and 1950s still life compositions, reflecting shifting artistic tastes over time.

How should I hang and light these pieces?

Paintings on canvas and paper require stable indoor environments away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture fluctuations. Proper picture wire and wall anchors suited to the weight of the specific wooden or gilt frame ensure secure placement. Gentle, indirect illumination highlights the brushwork and colours without exposing fragile pigments to damaging heat or ultraviolet rays.

Are original frames usually included?

Many listings include period frames, such as gilt gesso settings or timber mouldings that match the era of the artwork. These frames often show historical character appropriate to their age. Some pieces are sold without frames or in later replacements, so examining the specific listing details confirms whether the current setting is original to the piece.

How do I identify watercolour versus oil paintings?

Watercolour and gouache works are executed on paper, typically displayed behind glass to protect the delicate surface from dust and moisture. Oil and tempera paintings are usually rendered on canvas, wood panels, or rigid board without glass. Examining the surface texture reveals the glossy finish of dried oils or the matte quality of tempera compared to the flat, paper-based nature of watercolours.
