How do I identify the period of a maritime painting?

Examination of the vessel types, rigging styles, and clothing of any figures provides reliable clues to the era of creation. Additionally, framing materials and the preparation of the canvas or board offer further chronological indicators. Signatures, stretcher construction, and old gallery labels on the reverse often confirm the exact decade or active period of the artist.

What is the difference between canvas and panel supports?

Canvas provides a flexible woven surface that responds to atmospheric changes and typically requires a stretcher frame. Wood panels and boards offer a rigid, unyielding surface that prevents cracking in the paint layer. Many smaller outdoor sketches utilise panels for portability, while larger formal exhibition works favour stretched canvas.

How should I care for an antique oil painting?

Display the artwork away from direct sunlight and steady sources of artificial heat to prevent the oil paint and canvas from drying out or warping. Maintaining stable room humidity protects both the wooden support and the delicate gilt frame. Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry brush and avoid using liquid cleaners or household solvents on the paint layer.

Are these paintings original works or reproductions?

Every piece featured here is an original hand-painted work created directly by the artist using oil paints. They are unique artistic expressions rather than modern prints or mechanical reproductions. Visible brush texture, paint layering, and the physical interaction of pigment with the support confirm the unique nature of each piece.
