How do I clean an antique rug?

Professional specialist immersion washing removes embedded grit without damaging natural wool fibres or historical dyes. Regular gentle suction vacuuming without a rotating beater bar prevents dust accumulation. Avoid harsh chemical treatments and saturated home steam cleaning which can weaken cotton foundations and cause dye bleed.

Are these rugs suitable for high traffic?

Dense wool pile combined with sturdy cotton foundations provides exceptional durability for busy hallways and living spaces. Quality foundational materials absorb friction and cushion footfall effectively. Placing a breathable non-slip underlay beneath the carpet prevents lateral shifting and reduces wear against hard flooring.

How do I identify a Heriz weave?

Heriz carpets feature robust geometric medallions, often dominated by large cruciform centrepieces and bold corner spandrels. The wool tends to feel heavier and sturdier due to local water conditions containing copper. These village carpets utilise thick, resilient knotting designed to withstand decades of intensive domestic use.

What causes wool pile to wear unevenly?

Uneven foot traffic patterns and persistent directional sunlight exposure gradually weaken specific areas of the wool pile. Rotating the rug every six months balances environmental exposure and physical wear across the surface. Placing protective furniture cups underneath heavy table legs prevents localized crushing of the foundation structure.
