What subjects do these figures depict?

The subjects range widely from royal portrait figures and literary characters to biblical scenes and theatrical personalities. Makers also produced figures of animals and everyday tradespeople. Historical events, such as the Crimean War, provided inspiration for commemorative pairs and groupings found throughout the nineteenth century.

How were these ceramic pieces used originally?

Most items served as decorative ornaments displayed proudly on mantelpieces, sideboards, and drawing-room shelves in homes. Some forms, such as tobacco jars, combined decorative modelling with practical domestic storage. Pairs of figures were frequently arranged symmetrically to frame a fireplace or adorn the centre of a piece of furniture.

How do I care for antique pottery figures?

Keep the pieces out of direct sunlight to prevent fading in the delicate enamel paints and coloured glazes. Dust them gently with a soft, dry brush. Avoid using water or cleaning solutions on painted surfaces, as nineteenth-century enamel colours can be vulnerable to moisture.

How do I distinguish Georgian from Victorian figures?

Georgian and early figures often exhibit greater simplicity in form and softer pearlware bodies with muted enamel palettes. They tend to be smaller in scale and more primitive in execution. Victorian pieces frequently utilise heavier earthenware bodies, bolder multicoloured glazes, and feature flatbacks designed to sit flush against interior walls.
