How do I identify Dutch marquetry?

Dutch marquetry pieces often display dense floral arrangements and urn motifs executed in contrasting light and dark timbers. They frequently date from the 18th and early 19th centuries, appearing on bombe bureau bookcases and fall front writing desks.

What is a bureau bookcase?

A bureau bookcase combines a lower writing desk section with an upper shelved cabinet enclosed by doors. These taller forms provide substantial storage for papers and books while maintaining a decorative drop-front writing surface.

Where were bureau plat tables used?

A bureau plat served as a freestanding centre desk in large drawing rooms and libraries. Because the reverse side is finished with matching veneer, these tables stood away from walls rather than sitting flush against them.
