What is a mahogany folding dumb waiter?

A mahogany folding dumb waiter is a tiered piece of serving furniture designed to collapse or fold flat when not in use. These stands provide extra surface area for food or drinks and were historically used in dining rooms and parlours.

How do you fold the tiers down?

The tiers are connected by hinged brackets or pivoting joints that allow the leaves to drop vertically against the main support. Most examples utilise brass fittings to secure the moving parts during operation.

Are these pieces stable when open?

Yes, when fully extended, the locking mechanisms and support struts hold the shelves firm for serving. Care should be taken not to overload the upper tiers of tall stands.

How do I tell Georgian from Edwardian examples?

Georgian pieces generally exhibit heavier timber construction and simpler folding drop-leaf mechanisms from the eighteenth century. Edwardian and Sheraton Revival pieces often feature lighter frames with delicate satinwood inlay dating around nineteen hundred.
