What is an inlaid walnut tallboy?

An inlaid walnut tallboy is a tall storage chest combining walnut timbers with decorative fruitwood inlay and marquetry. These pieces provide deep vertical drawer storage for linens and garments. They appear in various styles from the 17th Century through to the Victorian era, showing distinct regional and period characteristics in their handles and feet.

How do I care for walnut furniture?

Walnut furniture requires stable room humidity and protection from direct sunlight to prevent the timber and veneers from drying out or fading. Gentle dusting with a dry cloth maintains the surface. Avoid placing these chests near heat sources and apply traditional wax sparingly to preserve the natural lustre of the wood.

How do I identify a Georgian tallboy?

Georgian tallboys typically display clean architectural lines, bracket or ogee feet, and traditional brass swan neck handles. The timber choice often includes figured walnut or mahogany. Construction details such as hand-cut dovetails on the drawer linings help confirm the period of manufacture.

Where should I place a tallboy?

A tallboy suits bedrooms, dressing rooms, and large hallways where vertical storage is necessary without consuming excessive floor space. Ensure the wall clearance allows safe access. Because these pieces are tall and heavy, securing them to a wall provides essential stability.
