What items are included in a cruet set?

A cruet set typically contains vessels for table condiments such as pepper pots, salt cellars, and mustard pots. These pieces often share a matching aesthetic and rest upon a shared silver frame or stand. Many period examples retain their original coloured glass inserts, such as blue glass liners for mustard pots, which protect the silver from corrosive contents.

How do I care for silver tableware?

Silver tableware requires gentle washing in warm soapy water using a soft cloth, followed by immediate drying with a lint-free towel. Avoid abrasive cleaners that can wear down engraved details and hallmarks over time. Regular handling during meals naturally retards tarnish on prominent surfaces, while stored pieces benefit from anti-tarnish cloths inside fitted presentation boxes.

What do the stamps on silver mean?

Assay marks provide a reliable history of when and where an item was created through a standardised system of symbols. These impressions typically record the maker's initials, the lion passant for sterling standard, a city symbol for the assay office, and a date letter. Interpreting these miniature stamps allows collectors to pinpoint the exact year of manufacture and identify the specific silversmith workshop responsible for the piece.

How were cased sets used?

Cased silver sets served primarily as prestigious gift items for weddings, christenings, and anniversaries among Victorian and Edwardian households. The fitted velvet or silk interiors protected the delicate spoons, napkin rings, or butter knives from damage while not in use. These presentation boxes demonstrate the high social standing of such items, which were frequently kept packed away until special dining occasions arose.
