Where should I hang an overmantel mirror?

Position the mirror directly above the fireplace mantelpiece to anchor the room's main focal point. This placement reflects light from windows across the space and balances the heavy architectural mass of the hearth. Ensure the fixing brackets are secured firmly into wall studs, as nineteenth-century giltwood frames carry considerable weight.

How do I clean an antique mirror?

Dust the frame gently with a soft, dry brush to protect delicate gesso and gold leaf surfaces. Avoid commercial liquid cleaners on the wood and use only a slightly damp cloth on the glass. Keep moisture away from the edges of the mirror plates to prevent further silvering deterioration.

What is the difference between Regency and Victorian styles?

Regency frames favour classical restraint, featuring architectural elements like columns, acanthus leaves and clean architectural lines. Victorian pieces often embrace exuberant Rococo revival ornamentation with asymmetrical curves and naturalistic motifs. Both styles utilise heavy gilding, but Victorian makers frequently incorporated composition ornament alongside hand carving.

Are folding dressing mirrors stable?

Early twentieth-century folding brass mirrors rely on robust hinges and weighted bases to support the side panels. Placing them on a level dressing table ensures the folding wings remain balanced. Adjust the side panels gently to avoid stressing the original hinge pins and surrounding frame joints.
