Where should I place a giltwood bench?

These benches suit prominent positions such as the foot of a bed, beneath a large window, or in a formal hallway. Their decorative frames demand a space where the carved wood and gold finish remain visible. Avoid damp areas or direct sunlight that might degrade silk upholstery and fragile gesso surfaces over time.

How do I clean a giltwood frame?

Dust the carved wooden surfaces gently with a soft, dry ostrich feather duster or a clean, dry artist brush. Avoid applying water, cleaning sprays, or polishes, as moisture lifts gold leaf from the gesso ground. Professional conservators should handle any lifting gilding or structural repairs to prevent further loss of the original finish.

How do I date a giltwood piece?

Examine the timber construction methods, tool marks, and stylistic indicators such as the symmetry of Louis XVI designs or the exuberant curves of Rococo revival work. Wear patterns on the gold leaf and the composition of the underlying gesso ground also help determine age. Comparing the specific carving motifs to documented furniture books narrows down the period of manufacture.
