Where should I place a gold gilt side table?

These tables suit hallways, drawing rooms, or living spaces where reflected light enhances architectural details. Console variants sit effectively against blank walls beneath artwork or mirrors. Smaller occasional and tripod tables function beside seating areas to hold lamps or decorative objects. Their reflective surfaces brighten darker corners of a room.

How do I care for antique gilded surfaces?

Dust gilded wood gently using a soft, dry brush without applying liquid cleaners or commercial polishes. Moisture and abrasive cloths can damage delicate gold leaf and underlying gesso. Keep tables away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent timber movement and finish degradation. Professional conservation is recommended for any structural repairs.

What is the difference between a console table and an occasional table?

Console tables are structurally designed to stand against a wall, sometimes requiring wall fixings for stability due to their heavy marble tops. They serve primarily decorative and architectural roles in formal spaces. Occasional tables are freestanding pieces intended for mobile use around a room. They include wine tables, tilt-top versions, and nests of tables designed for practical daily function.

How can I identify a marble top table's period?

Edge profiles, stone thickness, and geological varieties help distinguish eighteenth-century slabs from later nineteenth-century revival pieces. Early marble tops often show hand-sawn undersides and specific regional stone types. Matching the marble to the wooden base construction reveals whether the top is original to the frame. Cabinetmakers integrated stone slabs using fitted wooden battens and plaster bedding.
