How do I identify a georgian oil on canvas?

Examination of the canvas texture, stretcher construction, and pigmy composition helps determine the age of the piece. Clothing styles and hairstyles of the sitters also offer clear clues to the decade of creation. Signed works or attribution notes recorded on the stretcher or frame provide further context, though many surviving portraits remain by anonymous hands from British and European schools.

Where should I hang these paintings?

These works suit traditional living spaces, libraries, or hallways where lighting can be controlled to prevent fading. Placing them away from direct sunlight and heat sources protects the fragile oil pigments and canvas. Pairing a portrait with period furniture creates a cohesive historical atmosphere within a room. Secure wall fixings are essential to support the weight of the canvas and its heavy wooden frame.

How were these portraits used originally?

Wealthy patrons commissioned portraits to document family lineages, commemorate marriages, or display social standing within their estates. These paintings hung in grand reception rooms to impress visitors and preserve the family's legacy. Smaller oil studies and landscapes served as decorative elements for private chambers or country residences. They reflected the refined tastes of collectors during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

What is the difference between an original and an after work?

Original pieces were painted directly from life by the artist or under their immediate studio direction during the period. They carry the primary creative intent and contemporary record of the sitter. Works marked as 'after' an artist are later reproductions created by different hands to honour a famous composition. These secondary pieces allowed admirers to own popular imagery long after the original artist had passed.
