What is a georgian needlework table used for?

These tables served as functional items for ladies undertaking needlework, sewing, and writing in the parlour. Internal compartments and hanging bags kept threads, silks, and tools organised. Today they function effectively as occasional, lamp, or side tables in sitting rooms, offering discreet storage for small household items.

How do I identify a Regency period table?

Regency tables frequently feature dark timbers like rosewood and mahogany, often embellished with brass inlay or mounted on central pedestals with lyre or sabre supports. Cabinetmakers of this era drew inspiration from classical forms, resulting in cleaner structural lines compared to earlier Georgian furniture.

Are all these tables made of mahogany?

While mahogany is the most common timber seen across the listings, makers also utilised rosewood, satinwood, and burr yew for finer examples. Inlay work frequently incorporates boxwood and brass accents to contrast against the darker body timbers.

Where should I place one at home?

Their compact dimensions make these tables well-suited beside armchairs or sofas as lamp and occasional stands. Drop-leaf variants allow the top to adjust depending on available space. Keep them away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to protect polished timber surfaces and fabric components.
