How do I date an antique mirror?

Dating relies on examining the construction methods of the wooden frame, the backing boards, and the characteristics of the glass plate itself. Subtle shifts in stylistic motifs between the George II and Regency periods offer clear chronological clues. Secondary indicators include old fixings, tool marks on the timber, and the natural ageing of the gesso and gold leaf over centuries of existence.

Foxed glass refers to the speckled, darkened spots that develop on historical mirror plates as the backing degrades over time. This natural oxidation process is viewed by collectors as a mark of authenticity rather than a defect. Original mercury glass plates often display this characteristic softening of the reflection, distinguishing them from modern replacement glass.

Where should I hang an overmantel mirror?

Overmantel mirrors were traditionally designed to hang directly above a fireplace mantelpiece to reflect light and fill the vertical wall space. Their large proportions make them natural focal points in reception rooms and dining spaces. When positioning these heavy frames, ensure the wall fixings are secured adequately to support the substantial weight of the timber and glass.
