What is a birdcage mechanism?

The birdcage mechanism is a small wooden assembly situated directly beneath the table top that allows the surface to both rotate horizontally and tilt vertically. This pivoting action enabled eighteenth-century households to store the furniture flat against a wall when not in use.

How do I date a georgian birdcage table?

Dating relies on examining timber characteristics, leg profiles, and the turning style of the central pedestal column. Earlier examples often feature cabriole legs with pad feet, while later pieces adopt simpler straight or reeded supports. Secondary woods and construction marks inside the birdcage box further clarify the manufacturing period.

Were these tables used for dining?

Smaller versions served primarily as wine tables, tea tables, or occasional stands placed beside seating for convenience. Larger variants functioned as supper tables for light meals in private rooms. The tilt-top design meant servants could clear and store the furniture rapidly between uses.

How should I care for the mahogany surface?

Maintain the wood by applying natural beeswax periodically and avoiding direct placement near heat sources or strong sunlight. Clean surfaces with a soft, dry cloth to preserve the polished finish. Protect the tilt mechanism by supporting the weight of the top manually when operating the pivot.
