What is a Gainsborough chair?

A Gainsborough chair is a wide, open-armed armchair featuring upholstered back and seat panels designed primarily for the library or desk during the mid-eighteenth century. These pieces typically showcase mahogany frames with carved cabriole or straight legs, offering both comfort and formal elegance.

How do I identify a country armchair?

Country armchairs are distinguished by their use of native regional timbers such as elm, ash, fruitwood, and oak rather than imported mahogany. They often feature simpler vernacular designs like ladderbacks or Windsor construction with rush or wooden saddle seats. These utilitarian seats were built by local tradesmen for everyday domestic comfort rather than grand urban drawing rooms.

Were these chairs used at dining tables?

Yes, larger dining sets often included matching elbow chairs or carvers positioned at either end of the table for the hosts. These matched the surrounding side chairs in style and timber while providing the added comfort of arm supports. They served both a practical function during long meals and an aesthetic purpose in formal dining spaces.

How should I care for antique leather upholstery?

Leather upholstery benefits from gentle cleaning using specialist mild leather balms to maintain flexibility and prevent the material from drying out over time. Avoiding direct sunlight and maintaining stable room humidity will protect both the leather surface and the underlying wooden frame from environmental stress.
