A semainier is a traditional tall chest of drawers featuring seven separate tiers. The name derives from the French word for week, reflecting its historic use. This vertical layout provides substantial storage within a compact footprint. It suits bedrooms and dressing rooms where floor space is limited.

Why do these chests have marble tops?

Marble tops provide a durable, heat-resistant surface that protects the wood underneath from spills and heavy objects. They were common in nineteenth-century French cabinetmaking. The stone also adds significant weight to the tall carcase, anchoring the furniture securely. This feature often contrasts with warm walnut or mahogany veneers.

How do I style a tall chest?

A tall chest works well in bedrooms, hallways, or living spaces where vertical storage is required. Its narrow profile allows it to fit into tight wall spaces. Keep the surface simple by placing a small lamp or decorative tray on the marble top. Avoid overcrowding the tall frame to let the timber grain show.
