How do I identify a true nineteenth-century piece?

Examine the construction methods visible underneath and inside the drawers, looking for hand-cut dovetails and older timber seasoning. Ormolu mounts should display individual casting marks and hand finishing rather than uniform modern machine texturing. Compare the style markers against documented nineteenth-century revival periods, noting how nineteenth-century cabinetmakers reinterpreted eighteenth-century Louis XV proportions with distinct manufacturing techniques.

Where should I place a console table?

Console tables suit entrance hallways, living rooms, or dining spaces where floor depth is restricted. Many designs anchor against a wall beneath a matching pier mirror or painting. Freestanding console versions require careful positioning to ensure clearance along walkways while displaying their finished backs and carved serpentine aprons.

How do I care for kingwood and ormolu?

Dust wood surfaces regularly with a soft, dry cloth and avoid placing pieces in direct sunlight or near heat sources that dry out veneer. Keep humidity stable to prevent timber shrinkage and subsequent lifting of delicate marquetry. Clean ormolu mounts gently without harsh chemical polishes that strip the original fire gilding. Professional wax maintenance preserves the polish of exotic hardwoods over decades.

What is the difference between a bureau plat and a side table?

A bureau plat functions specifically as a writing desk, featuring fitted frieze drawers and a dedicated leather or wooden top insert. These pieces are built for sitting at and working. Side tables serve decorative or functional display purposes without writing surfaces or kneeholes underneath the main frame.
