What is a fauteuil armchair?

A fauteuil is an open-arm French chair designed with exposed wooden framing around an upholstered back and seat. These chairs were built for formal reception rooms. The open sides distinguish them from bergères, allowing voluminous historic garments to fit comfortably between the arms.

How do I identify Louis style chairs?

Louis style chairs exhibit specific architectural motifs linked to French royal periods, such as straight tapered legs for Louis the Sixteenth and curved cabriole legs for Louis the Fifteenth. Revival pieces from the nineteenth century frequently copy these exact proportions and carved ornaments.

Where should I place an accent chair?

These historic chairs suit quiet corners, drawing rooms, or bedrooms where their carved woodwork acts as a visual anchor. Pairing them with contemporary furnishings creates a balanced contrast. Ensure the seat height aligns comfortably with surrounding lounge furniture.

How do I care for giltwood furniture?

Giltwood requires dry dusting with a soft brush to protect the delicate gold leaf layer from abrasion. Avoid liquid cleaners and moisture. Keep these chairs away from direct sunlight to prevent the underlying wood and gesso from drying out.
