A French country bedstead brings provincial warmth and classic proportions to a bedroom through traditional forms and robust timbers.
French Country Bedstead
A french country bedstead encompasses double, king and super king sizes designed with characteristic regional proportions. These frames draw on recognised historical vocabulary, notably Louis XV style curves and simpler provincial formats.
The pieces on this page span from the nineteenth century into the early twentieth century, specifically covering periods around 1890, 1900 and 1920. Buyers encounter both timber constructions and metal alternatives.
Wooden examples frequently employ walnut or painted finishes, whilst metal versions combine black iron with brass details. Distinctive variants include faux bamboo turning and carved decoration.
Materials and construction
Carpenters utilised solid wood, turned hardwood and walnut, applying carved ornamentation by hand to structural timber frames. Painted wood finishes provided an alternative surface treatment for provincial rooms.
Metal bedframes combined iron and brass components, joining structural black iron tubing with polished brass decorative elements to create robust sleeping furniture.
