How do I date a gilt mirror?

Dating relies upon examining the construction methods of the wooden frame, the composition of the gesso, and the style of the carving. Assemblage techniques and backboards provide further clues to the manufacturing decade. Mirror plates also offer evidence, as older mercury plates display distinct oxidation spots while later glass plates appear clear and uniform.

What is mercury glass?

Mercury glass refers to mirror plates produced using a liquid mercury and tin backing rather than modern silver nitrate solutions. This historic technique creates a soft, deep reflection with characteristic dark speckles. Over decades, moisture seeps behind the glass to cause foxing, which collectors value as a sign of authenticity.

Where should I hang an overmantel mirror?

Overmantel mirrors are traditionally positioned centrally above a fireplace mantel to reflect light and anchor the proportions of the wall. Their grand scale also suits placement above low sideboards or console tables in reception rooms. Due to their substantial weight, secure wall fixings and load-bearing brackets are essential for safe installation.

How do I clean an antique gilt frame?

Cleaning requires a soft, dry brush to gently remove dust from recessed carvings without disturbing fragile gold leaf. Moisture and chemical cleaners must be avoided to prevent stripping the delicate metallic finish. Professional conservation is recommended if the gesso is unstable or the gilding is flaking.
