How do I use french bergere chairs?

These armchairs suit drawing rooms, studies, or bedrooms where comfortable seating is required. Their enclosed form creates a private, cosy seat while adding a decorative focal point to the room. Because they are frequently found as pairs, they work well placed opposite a fireplace or flanking a sofa. Their substantial presence anchors a seating arrangement without dominating the floor space.

Are these chairs comfortable?

Bergere chairs were specifically designed for relaxed lounging, featuring deep seats and fully upholstered backs and sides. The enclosed sides offer support and shield the sitter from draughts. Comfort levels depend on the interior stuffing and upholstery condition, with many surviving examples offering deep, sprung seating. Newly upholstered versions provide modern interior support within a traditional frame.

How do I date a bergere chair?

Dating relies on examining the timber, the style of the carving, and the construction methods used in the frame. Pieces from the nineteenth century often display heavier proportions and characteristic regional interpretations of earlier Louis styles. Early twentieth-century pieces may show stylistic revivals of French Chateau or Neoclassical forms. Original paint finishes and surface wear also help establish the age of the woodwork.

What is original paint?

Original paint refers to the initial decorative coating applied to the wooden frame when the chair was first made. This surface has not been stripped or modernly repainted, retaining its historical patina. Surviving original paint often exhibits natural craquelure and gentle wear accumulated over decades or centuries. Collectors value this untouched finish for its authentic historical appearance.
