How do I clean old silver candlesticks?

Use a soft cloth and a gentle, non-abrasive silver polish formulated to preserve antique surfaces. Avoid aggressive scrubbing around engraved details, hallmarks, and weighted base seams. Regular dusting with a dry microfibre cloth prevents tarnish build-up without stripping the underlying metal or plating.

Are these candlesticks weighted at the base?

Many taller sterling silver and plated candlesticks contain internal filling materials like resin, plaster, or wood to provide stability. This weight prevents the tall vertical columns from tipping over easily during use. Solid cast pieces from the eighteenth century often lack internal filling, relying instead on thick metal walls for balance.

How can I date my candlesticks?

Examine the piece for stamped hallmarks, which include city assay marks, standard sterling symbols, and date letters that correspond to specific years. Stylistic clues like neoclassical columns, Victorian proportions, or Art Nouveau curves also narrow down the era of manufacture. Maker marks help cross-reference active workshop dates when formal hallmarks are worn or absent on plated items.

Can I burn standard candles in them?

Most antique candlesticks accommodate standard taper candles, though slight variations in socket diameters can occur across different periods. Checking the nozzle size ensures a snug fit so that candles burn upright. Using dripless candles or fitted wax inserts helps protect the metal surface and internal sockets from heat damage and wax accumulation.
