How do I use a spark screen safely?

Place the screen directly in front of the fireplace opening once a fire is burning to catch any escaping embers. Ensure the base sits firmly on the hearth to prevent tipping. Keep combustible materials away from the metal mesh during use. Folding sections can be adjusted to fit the specific width of your fireplace surround.

What materials are typical for these screens?

Brass, copper, and iron form the primary structural and decorative components of these hearth accessories. Wire mesh and glass panels frequently fill the central frames. Some examples incorporate wood framing, tapestry panels, or leaded stained glass. Metal elements often feature polished, patinated, or black finishes.

How do I clean a brass or copper frame?

Dust the metal surfaces regularly with a soft, dry cloth to prevent the accumulation of soot and grime. Avoid abrasive cleaners that can damage patinated or polished finishes. Preserve the existing surface character by using mild soapy water for stubborn marks, followed by thorough drying. Specialised metal cleaners should be used sparingly depending on the desired sheen.

How do I distinguish Arts and Crafts screens?

Arts and Crafts pieces emphasise honest construction, hand-worked surfaces, and materials like beaten copper and wrought iron. Look for riveted joints and stylised natural motifs. These designs avoid excessive ornamentation in favour of solid craftsmanship and functional utility. They often display the direct marks of the maker's hand.
